September, 2001
The State University of New York, Confederation of Alumni Associations,
has named the Alumni Association, SUNY Maritime College’s entry, DomeNet,
the winner in the 2001 Excellence in Alumni Programming and Electronic
Media category.
DomeNet, has provided an inexpensive way for the Alumni Association to
disseminate information to our membership wherever they are.
DomeNet has allowed the Association to provide a forum for geographically
dispersed alumni to exchange information, interact with each other, and
otherwise discuss matters relevant to SUNY Maritime College and the marine
and related industries.
DomeNet has enhanced the sense of community that binds our graduates
together and maintains the camaraderie that graduates have taken away with
them for the past 125 years.
DomeNet has enabled graduates to provide feedback to the Alumni Association's
Board of Directors and thus gained for more democratic representation.
DomeNet gives the current student body (future alumni) and faculty the
ability to interact with alumni.
DomeNet gives alumni the ability to help each other out both personally
and professionally.
DomeNet enhances the association's ability to raise funds.
DomeNet has also provided several unforeseen side benefits. The
Alumni Association Board now has a way to "feel the pulse" of the
members that elected them. Numerous committees designed to help
the college in a wide range of areas were formed and DomeNet helped
with the recruiting. Many inactive alumni have been brought back
"into the fold" as result of DomeNet. The list affords them a way to
"belong" again without a huge drain on their time. The benefits go
on and on. DomeNet has become an invaluable tool of SUNY Maritime
College's Alumni Association in disseminating information and
communicating with alumni.
This award was created by the SUNY Confederation of Alumni Associations to honor alumni programs which demonstrate
outstanding professional achievement and significant contributions to higher education and/or public service.
