News From Fort Schuyler
January 23, 1998 - Volume 2, No. 6
SAD NEWS - Lt. Dave Hessel, a former Naval Science Department instructor passed away on 2 January 1998 in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania after suffering a heart attack. A memorial service will be held in the Fort Chapel at 1600, Wednesday 28 January, 1998." (Source: Plan of the Week, January 26-February 1, 1998)
NEWSPAPER COVERAGE TWO WEEKS IN A ROW - The Winter Graduation was the motivation for an article in the NY Times on Sunday January 18, Section 14 (The City) page 13. There was even a nice picture of new alumni Gregory Banas, Edward Engle and Dimitri Afonin with the pulling boat MAGIC (whaleboat?) giving the shot a nautical flavor. And the reporter got the name to the college right, too. The Office of College Relations' Rick Miranda seems to be getting the word out very effectively.
AND DON'T FORGET ABOUT TV ON SUPER BOWL SUNDAY MORNING - Let Clive Cussler '97 (Honorary Doctor of Letters in Maritime History) kick off your Super Bowl Sunday and turn on CBS Sunday Morning News with Charles Osgood. The program begins at 9:00 EST on January 25 and SUNY Maritime might have another few seconds of fame.
MARITIME vs. KING'S POINT - Men's basketball's the sport. Maritime's the venue. Saturday January 31 at 1:00 P.M.'s the time. If this mailing list showed up we'd have quite a cheering section.
ADMISSIONS IS ONLINE - WITH A VENGEANCE! Applicants can now carry out the entire registration procedure online. Go to http://www.sunymaritime.edu and click on Admissions. "Cool!"
PUBLIC SPEAKING WEBSITE - In the Faculty Assessment Committee survey which was sent out in 1997 to 1992-1996 alumni, question #44 asked what new courses or areas of study the college should offer. One fairly frequent suggestion from alumni was that there be more training for public speaking. This was reiterated in a recent email from an alumnus who wrote: " Public speaking is extremely important in the "real" world. I wish I had NO choice but the take a class!
"Since learning can be a lifetime pleasure, here is a website recommended in the January issue of Choice Magazine called The Virtual Presentation Assistant. "This online tutorial designed to enhance public speaking skills offers assistance in determining the purpose of a presentation, selecting and researching a topic, analyzing an audience, supporting points, outlining points, using visual aids, and presenting the speech." FORWARD SUGGESTION - If your e-mail address book contains the names of any retired/former faculty or staff from the Maritime College, please forward this newsletter to them, as well as to other alumni and friends of the college who may not be subscribed.
WHAT'S IN A WORD? - The former 1st Class Mess Deck is now called the "Catering Hall." (Usage noted in the Admiral's weekly schedule, January 20-30) The new designation may be descriptive, but it lacks a certain nautical flavor (the word, not the food), although I guess "Mess Deck" isn't that "salty" either. Still, perhaps there may be room for change. For example, how about finding a corporate sponsor for the room: Chicken of the Sea Trattoria, Red Lobster Lounge? And there's always the option of "The Dome Dining Room at Fort Schuyler." :)
SOME THINGS DON'T CHANGE (MUCH) - "Civilian Clothing - All cadets are reminded that they must be in prescribed uniform of the day between the hours of 0730-1600, at all meals and at all times when transacting business at any office. Civilian clothing will not be worn in the Fort area or the Science and Engineering Building. After 1600 civilian clothing may be worn in the Library only."
