LONG BOATS - You've heard of tall ships, now there is a new concept in
shipbuilding - really long ships. Take a look at the plans for mile-long
CITY AT SEA at: http://www.freedomship.com/ DETLEF PRESSER, Class of 1980,
notes that "...it could be a great opportunity for Maritime engineers for
the future." [And for deck officers as well.]
UPWARD BOUND - The new Branch Head of the Military Sealift Command HQ's
Electrical/Electronics Branch (http://www.msc.navy.mil) is BRENDAN
THOMPSON, Class of 1991. Brendan, an EE major, will be managing a group of
electrical engineers who provide electrical engineering support to the MSC
fleet of 100+ vessels. He writes: "Current projects include engineering
support of new phone systems, generator failure analysis, installing new
SATCOM communications, USNS SUPPLY class conversions, variable speed drive
winch problems, propulsion transformer testing, and new radar
installations." A full agenda for sure.
BELLS OF ST. MARY'S - Time to practice the alma mater for graduation.
According to the December 22, 1949 issue of the student newspaper, Porthole,
the Bells of St. Mary's "...was made the official school song in 1920
because the ST.MARY'S was the school's first training ship. The song was
written about the bells of St. Mary's Church, located in Southampton,
England." [Maritime was an early adopter, considering that the song was
written by Douglas Furber and A. Emmett Adams in 1917.] In July 1949, during
the EMPIRE STATE II's Summer Sea Term visit to Portsmouth, Training Ship
Master ALFRED F. OLIVET, Class of 1921, traveled to Southampton, where he
was given a tour of the church, newly renovated after World War II bomb
damage. Upon returning to Fort Schuyler, Olivet led a successful effort to
raise money for the church building fund from alumni, students and faculty.
In 1950 the master of the SS AMERICA, Captain JOHN W. ANDERSON, Class of
1915, was delegated to make the presentation of this gift to the Bishop of
Peterborough in Southampton on one of his trips to Southampton. "The Bells
of St. Mary's, Ah ! Hear they are calling / The old lads, and the new lads
who have gone to sea." [Time to update the lyrics to include all our alumnae
lasses ?]
